Complementing their thoughtfully renovated and restored villa in Ararimu, Onsite Landscapes’ Sean Polwart has designed and built a playhouse with a difference. Drawing inspiration from a family trip to Hobbiton in Matamata, this whimsical hideaway is set into a planted hillside, which has been shaped by a digger. Boulders and recycled railway sleepers lead to the house, with a waterfall and toadstool lights creating a playful yet calming ambience.

The garden surrounding this family home also serves as a testing ground for landscape concepts and the rehabilitation of plants removed during Onsite Landscapes’ projects. Positioned beneath a bank of bush, including tree ferns and a large established pūriri tree, the floodlit basketball court brings a new concept in residential multi-play courts to New Zealand.
